Smart Ways to Combat Low Morale!

In most organisations, morale is as elusive as it is threatening. Managers rightly understand that without strong morale, productivity and performance will suffer. The telltale warning signs – absenteeism, negativity, conflict and high turnover – can rapidly tip an organisation into a crisis that’s hard to crawl back from. Which is why it’s never been more important for managers to consider innovative tactics to keep morale in good shape.

An employee engagement study by Gallup found that only 30% of employees were engaged at work. The figure showed a decrease in correlation with the level of engagement of managers, demonstrating a flow-on or negative “cascade” effect. This shows the importance of engaging and boosting morale at all levels of seniority.

Challenges in this area abound: budgetary, interpersonal preferences and time constraints being just a few. So where do you start when devising new morale boosting efforts for your team? We suggest looking at these three main options.

Relationship and team building

Strong, supportive relationships are the cornerstone of healthy morale. How that looks will be slightly different for each organisation, depending on its values and industry.

Team building has moved beyond the standard golf days and blindfolded “trust fall” exercises in recent times. In a digital service economy that’s increasingly dominated by savvy millennial’s, team morale exercises require an element of creative innovation.

For leading tech companies in Silicon Valley, for example, this could look as unconventional as “Karaoke Rickshaw…espionage-themed adventure games… massive music video competitions” or even exercises that see teams “take over an island and turn it into a fortress of fun.”

As you might guess, high quality (and high cost) team building activities are a core part of these organisations’ talent recruitment, retention and performance strategies. Are you applying similar principles in your workplace?

Think about new approaches to team building and developing morale. You’ll want to take into account practicalities like the age profile, accessibility and the mix of personality types likely to be involved. Through engaging expert team activity planners and consultants, you’ll limit the risk of any “top-down” or out of touch decision making.

Expertly designed incentive programs

What if you could improve your business bottom line while lifting the office mood? Perhaps you’d like to take a leaf out of Richard Branson’s book and offer an island incentive to your staff.

Branson is a proponent of investing in staff trips and experiences. So much so that he bought an island off the Sunshine Coast for his staff. The invite-only staff retreat is just the sort of thing you might expert from the entrepreneur, who said, “When I think of the achievement that all of the staff have done here, as a thank-you we have bought this beautiful island where they can come and party and go away for weekends”.

In reality, most organisations will keep their incentives far less extravagant. But no matter the size or cost, incentive programs and rewards are vital to the morale and motivation of some industries – driving an increase in performance and boosting your bottom line.

Successful incentive programs and trips are carefully designed and can take months of meticulous planning. Incentive experts and conference agents are essential partners for helping you get the most out of the process. At Impact, we have years of experience in this space and can work with you to customise the perfect incentive program.

Team trips and celebrations

Since the advent of remote work, the opportunities for team travel and international conferences have proliferated. And many companies are seeing the benefits flow to their staff morale.

There are myriad options for travel-hungry managers to consider. Defining the goal of the trip will help you narrow down the options. Is your goal purely team bonding and celebrating a milestone or project? Then consider a short retreat with a festive dinner and free time during the day for attendees. Adding a surprise element to the trip is always a fun and memorable twist: maybe it’s a notable key speaker or performer or even a thoughtful gift bag.

If you’re looking for something more structured, you might want to tie travel in with a staff conference, professional development or intensive training workshops. There’s nothing like a fun exotic location away from the stresses of home to improve engagement in these learning programs. We work with a number of national and international organisations to craft unforgettable team conferences.

Berlin – Life is a Cabaret

In the 1920’s and early 1930’s Berlin was renowned for its cultural diversity, liberal attitudes and decadence which inspired the Academy Award winning movie “Cabaret” starring Liza Minnelli and Michael York.

After a tumultuous 20th Century history with the Nazi era in the 30’s and 40’s followed by the communist domination of the East, Berlin lived as a divided city until the fall of the Wall in 1989.

The city has well and truly burst back on the scene as a political, cultural and culinary world city. One can spend a week there and not cover all the attractions such as the palaces of Potsdam, remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Pergamon Museum on Museum Island, the Reichstag Building and of course the symbol of reunification, the Brandenburg Gate.

Significantly cheaper than Paris or London and with outstanding hotel infrastructure this is a European city to consider for your next conference or incentive.

Images below include a function at a the historic Wasserwerk (Waterworks), typical of Berlin’s industrial night scene and of course a “Cabaret” themed Gala Dinner at the Kempinski Hotel.

We might add that Adlon Kempinski Hotel Berlin, located adjacent to the magnificent Brandenburg Gate rated as one of the best ever for some of our regular conference attendees. Amongst many attributes, a stand out was the liberal amount of champagne and caviar on the breakfast buffet, it doesn’t get much better.

Poland – Send them to the Salt Mines

This might not sound a likely gala dinner venue, but the Wieliczka Salt Mines located in a spa town just outside Krakow, Poland, are bound to surprise and amaze your event attendees.

For our client event, our group thought they were simply being taken on a tour of the Salt Mines prior to dinner. These mines are a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tour is extensive and at each turn you’ll be amazed, underground lakes, grottoes, even a cathedral as well as a spectacular sound and light display.

After being blown away by these amazing sights, imagine the surprise when you enter an elegant underground cavern set for a three course banquet. Even the chandeliers are made from salt crystals!

Krakow is a real gem and can be compared to cities like Prague. The old town is completely walled as you step back in time with the jewel in the crown being the 40,000 sq metre Main Square, the largest medieval square in Europe dating back to the 13th century.

Combined with Warsaw which is an amazing city full of contrasts and an excellent culinary scene, this makes for an excellent conference or incentive destination.

Bonus – Zloty’s not Euros. Poland has stuck to its original currency, the Zloty, and not adopted the Euro, so it is an excellent value for money destination.

Where is the Aussie Dollar still worth a Dollar ?

Exporters might be happy but overseas travel budgets and travellers are being stretched by the lamentable value of the Australian Dollar.

Hey it’s not all doom and gloom and there are still some great destinations where the embattled Aussie is still buying excellent value.

South Africa is probably the stand-out where our Dollar is buying 25% more than 12 months ago!!! While hotel rates aren’t bargain basement, you get some of the best lodgings on Earth. The bonus is eating, drinking, staging and entertainment are unbelievable value.

Canada, where CAD and AUD are at parity. It also has outstanding hotels, beautiful Vancouver, the Canadian Rockies and of course the French influence in Montreal and Quebec City. A great North American experience where a Dollar is still worth a Dollar.

Poland and Croatia, not yet having adopted the Euro are still outstanding value as are some of the other former East bloc countries like the Czech Republic and Hungary. Let’s hope they stay out of the Euro.

Croatia’s spectacular coast and photogenic coastal ports like Dubrovnik need no introduction. Less well known in the Australian market is Poland, where the city of Krakow is an absolute medieval gem and Warsaw a delightful and spacious city with a magnificent old town, rebuilt stone by stone after near total destruction in WW2.

New Zealand being closer to home, the NZ Dollar tends to track our own and with its lakes, mountains, great wine and gastronomic experiences means you don’t have to go half way around the world to experience all these things.

Thailand where the Thai Baht means is 4% less than 12 months ago still provides world class hotels, shopping and attractions is very attractively priced.

Bali of course has some of the world’s best resorts, ancient Hindu culture, outstanding cuisine and some hotels prepared to negotiate rates in AUD.

Berlin is one of Europe’s most exciting cities to visit and an outstanding destination for conferences and incentives. In spite of being in Germany and Euro based expenses, it still represents value for money and is a bargain compared with the likes of Paris and London. So even in Europe you can still find value for money destinations.

Taking the glass is half full approach, there are always worse currencies than ours and still plenty of opportunities to host your conference or incentive trip offshore and still get great bang for your buck.

Happiness is Conferencing in Fiji!

The Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa at Natadola Bay hosted our recent conference for some 250 carpet retailers, sponsors and corporate staff.

The four-night program was action packed with an enjoyable balance between work, rest and play.

Social functions included a cocktail outdoor welcome reception with live cooking food stations and cultural entertainment; a pirate themed costume party on a private beach with some very impressive fire dancers and a Bollywood themed gala dinner in a spectacularly themed setting. Following the gala dinner the group kicked on at a specially created private nightclub with entertainment by renowned DJ “Hot Dub Time Machine” taking us on a musical journey from 1954 to the present – with his high energy show of light and sound.

Just one week before the conference Fiji was unfortunately hit by the devastating Cyclone Winston. We collaborated with our client and came up with ways that we could contribute to the restoration of the island. This included an auction during the gala dinner where over AU$15,000 was raised for the victims and rebuilding of the devastated areas.

Additionally, attendees were given the opportunity to donate anything from clothing to toiletries, food, toys and school stationary. The donations were very generous and filled a large pick-up truck to the brim. One of the conference sponsors, Dunlop Flooring, were extremely generous and sent an entire shipping container load of Bonds underwear and clothing along with Tontine bedding to Fiji!

The speaker line up included emcee and presenter Scott Williams, who also launched his brand new book “The Happy Human” at the conference. Scott is a perennial favourite because of his incredible sense of humour and ability to emcee, present key notes and comedy sketches.

We’d have to also make mention of the standing ovation received by Michael Crossland who presented an inspiring story of survival against the odds and a life dedicated to enriching the lives of others encapsulated by his quote “master the gift of giving and you will master the gift of life”. There were a number of other outstanding and inspiring presenters offering advice on many aspects of modern business, technology and the importance of social media and how it is driving business growth.

The service at the InterContinental Fiji Resort was outstanding, matched by an incomparable setting of spectacular white sandy beach lined with swaying palms. It just doesn’t get much better!

Teambuilding with Music and Jetfighters

Are you looking for new or novel ideas for your next team building activity?   Here are a couple of options that we have come across recently that are worthy of  consideration.

Sir Richard Branson describes SongDivision as “a great company connecting employees and customers using the power of music”.   SongDivision develop creative solutions to help you communicate your message and entertain your audience, through the power and magic of music. They can offer a number of different programs that can be tailored to your needs.

Fighter pilots operate in some of the most rapidly changing, complex and hostile environments on Earth, yet they consistently excel in achieving planned outcomes. They are also particularly adept at maintaining clear focus on objectives in the midst of complexity. This is a learned skill too, that relies on simple and repeatable processes to get things done, but unlike their other skills it requires no special talent acheter viagra gratuit.   Afterburner Australia & New Zealand is a team of fighter pilots who are passionate about helping business learn and apply the same techniques to achieve mission success that worked for them in their air force careers.

This might be an incongruous mix of ideas, but it just goes to show that there are many different ways to get your teams to collaborate, communicate and bond to achieve those lofty goals you are aiming for.  For more information contact Mike on 03 9535 3600.

The World’s Most Geologically Active Island Destination is…?

In the last post we extolled the virtues of Queenstown as an exciting incentive or conference destination, so you might think we’re referring to New Zealand when we talk about the world’s most geologically active island?

Wrong…..

We are talking about the other side of the planet – Iceland!

Iceland is a great place to consider for an incentive reward or conference when you have been everywhere else in the world and you’re looking for something completely different.

About one third larger than Tasmania, Iceland sits mid-Atlantic where the tectonic plates of the Americas and Europe collide, making it the most geologically and volcanically active island on earth.  It is home to some 30 active volcanoes.

Cruising is an ideal way to see the incredible sights of this sparsely populated island. Our group of approximately 60 participants cruised aboard Ponant Cruises “Le Boreal”, an intimate and luxury vessel accommodating approximately 250 passengers. Being a French cruise line, as one would expect, the food, wine and hospitality on board were excellent.

In June, the sun barely dips below the horizon well after midnight providing a short twilight before rising again an hour or two later. Photographers will love it as you have the most perfect light conditions and the clearest skies imaginable. The dramatic landscapes with geysers, glaciers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, lush green pastures and arid deserts are quite breathtaking

It’s not as hard to get to as you might imagine, with regular daily flights from London plus all the Scandinavian capitals. Groups can be booked on board cruise ships and a full ship charter is a great option for larger groups. To find out more contact Mike on 03 9535 3600 or mobile 0438 73 2366.

The World’s Adrenaline Capital?

On a recent incentive trip of over 200 persons to Queenstown, New Zealand, participants had the privilege of selecting an activity of their choice on their leisure day.

Of the activities offered, over 50 of them chose skydiving!!! While there were some nerves and a sense of dread, everyone followed through and all came back exhilarated. A tick off the bucket list for many.

Another 50 plus chose the scenic helicopter trip to the Ledge. We also had a group of petrol heads who went to the fantastic Highland Motorsport Park for an amazing GoKart experience, speed circuits in the Porches and a visit to the excellent motor museum.

Other activities selected included paragliding, quadbiking, zip trekking and of course bungy jumping.

It was not all action and adrenaline; some chose to tour the wineries of the Gibston Valley along with an excellent lunch at one of the wine estates. Another group chose golf at the picturesque Jack’s Point Golf Club and others chose to indulge themselves with spa treatments.

All this packed into a single day’s activity!

New Zealand Tourism’s marketing boasts of Queenstown as the Adrenaline Capital of the World, a claim we’d endorse. Click here to view some of the other activities they list as adrenaline pumping activities. Add to this it is a year round destination and exceptional value for money.

There are regular well timed daily flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane making the logistics of moving over 200 persons in a single day a breeze.

What are Aussies lusting for?

This article appeared in Travel Weekly about what Aussies lust for!  For sure travel is up there proving that incentives and conferences in sought after destinations are always likely to engage your target audience. Which Rate As World’s Top 10 Paradise Islands?

What about the Isle of Pines, New Caledonia?

I have been privileged to have visited 4 of those listed in the Top 10, click here to find out which they are. One of my favourites didn’t appear on the list and that is the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia. It’s a little slice of heaven on earth. With its trade mark Columnar Pines and the unusual lush tropical vegetation, the landscape could best be described as Jurassic Park meets Bonsai.

While kayaking on the lagoons, you see nothing but crystal clear turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, bizarre rocky limestone outcrops topped with lush vegetation. You don’t see roads, buildings, crowds of people, just pure paradise. At one point I spotted 5 large sea turtles lazily swimming less than 30 metres away.

Le Meridien Isle of Pines is a stunning low rise resort that blends harmoniously into its surroundings. It is a perfect venue for a smaller incentive group, but also ideal as a “buy out” for anyone looking at about 30 to 40 rooms. Turn the resort into your own private club, an ultimate reward and getaway.

Only 20 minutes flying time from the capital Noumea and regular direct flights to Noumea from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, access is easy. Whet your appetite and check out the video.

I guess Isle of Pines didn’t make the top 10 purely because it is not overrun by tourism and not enough people have visited to vote for it. Maybe we should keep it a secret.

For those wanting to visit, New Caledonia Tourism will come to the party with support for site inspections. Click here for details.
